Professional Development BS

June 24, 2007

I just had to write some prof dev BS on a form. Rather than let it get lost in the system, which really WILL turn it into BS, I will post it here. I actually just looked at my post from September last year which outlined my goals for the year . Was useful in helping me write today.

Top marks to my blog!

BS follows:

I think that i have progressed well in assessment which is allowing me to tailor my teaching to hit assessment criteria. It also helps children’s behaviour when they know what they need to do. I will continue to work on behaviour management by simplifying my delivery, differentiating
effectively and setting acheiveable tasks. I will continue to strengthen relationships with the children through non curricular activities (ie tv channel for the school)

Young Enterprise for Year 10

June 6, 2007

Spent a couple of hours today with Y10 off timetable doing group work run by Young Enterprise. It was great to see kids really engaged and participating in all the activities. I was most impressed with how well the kids work problem solving in teams. If I compare it to my experience of team work at school, which was academically better than my current school, I would say that this generation are definately better at working together collaboratively.

Of course such a judgement is very subjective, but we actually did a Young Enterprise scheme at my secondary school. We actually had to make a business over a period of a few months and make money over the weeks leading up to Christmas – more like what our Y9 s do now with Mini Enterprise. My memories are first of no one wanting to lead; then no one wanting to follow either, negative comments were the norm. Whilst today I saw people calmly brainstorming and disscussing in a very mature way.

In the assembly at the end, more than one of the business people who volunteer to make these Young Enterprise days possible, said that today had been the best day that they had ever had in schools doing this project. If you ever get to see the film I made last year (sorry not online, DVD only) of this same group doing their Y9 Mini Enterprise last year you would see why.

Timetabling – CH
Performance Related Pay – AE
Head of Year Role – SG

Day 2 – Newick Park

Day 3 – Oathall

Year 7 Curriculum

June 4, 2007

Our Y7s do some Powerpoint and desktop publishing; spreadsheets then questionnaires and datahandling in excel; Control using Logo and then websites. I’ve got to pull a websites module together. But I’m wondering if they shouldn’t be doing something else? Afterall they will get websites in Y8 and Y9.

Technology changes and in the last 5 years broadband Internet has penetrated into the majoring of homes. What about:

  1. Internet Safety
  2. Search, authorship and domain names, copyright and plaigiarism
  3. Storytelling, video editing or interactive media (Flash?)

Non of these are taught very well in the average comprehensive school – if at all.
